Are any of the people alive today who were held as slaves?
I read an article titles "Collective guilt for slavery doesn't heal, it divides."
Just a brief word.
If anyone from this generation feels guilty about slavery, especially if they did not own slaves; get your mind set correct. Of course, if you feel guilty because your entire fortune was built on slavery, then give it all away.
Personally, I do not feel guilty for the crimes or sins of my ancestors. I did not commit those crimes. Then, at the time, it was not a crime for them either. It was the state of things (all-be-it moral or not). We all live in an ever-changing world of what is acceptable/right and what is not. That is the nature of our social beast.
Each generation must learn from those before us, so that we do not make the same mistakes against others.
Paying money to people who may have been the posterity of those who were slaves only continues the problem of injustices. Because we now punish people for crimes they had absolutely nothing to do with committing.
The best we can do is to stop the injustices -- not continue them.
