When asked that question; many people begin reciting with, "I pledge allegiance..."
At this point, you are guessing that may not be our nation's actual pledge.
This is the pledge taught as the nations pledge. Its fully, Congressionally adopted text:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Written and originally publish in 1892 by a Socialist Preacher; Francis Bellamy.
The 1892 Version: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The original salute was identical to what became the Heil Hitler Salute.
The 1923 Version: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The 1954 Version: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
By this time, the salute was changed to the holding the right hand over the heart.

According to this definition; socialism goes completely contrary to the founding and independence of these united States of America; where, if a person can produce more to enjoy more; that is their right. It is not to be controlled by government.
The Constitution of the United States of America, Article 4, Section 4, ratified in 1790, states:
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government...
—Proof the person pledges their allegiance to the government, which is —the Republic. A government, which by its oath to support and defend The Constitution of the United States of America Article 6, owes its allegiance to the people, the nation.
Congress, being fully informed of The Constitution's content; having sworn an oath to support and defend it; knew what it was doing with their "pledge of allegiance". Congress knew the TREASON they committed by adopting this pledge and then forcing young impressionable minds to repeatedly recite this pledge, under penalty of punishment. If they did not know their treason, those government officers must claim that ignorance of the law —is a valid excuse. Because that pledge represents the grossest ignorance concerning The Supreme Law of the Land. That ignorance is TREASON, in accord with The Constitution, Article 3, Section 3.
The nation's real pledge is as old as the nation. Since the people are the nation, it is a pledge among citizens of the united States of American.
From the last lines of the last paragraph of the The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, it states:
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
Without knowing the entire purpose for The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America; this pledge makes little sense.
The entire purpose of The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America is that of the equal security of all the peoples' rights; —not the rich over the poor, or yours over theirs. All this means is that when a united States American sees your rights are unjustly attacked; it is their sworn duty, as a united States American, to come to your aid to defend your rights and especially so if they do not like you or the right you exercise; so long as you are not unjustly violating another's rights. With this, every person also secures the protection of their own rights —because their rights are identical. Though each person may exercise different rights from the list and perhaps place differing values on the same rights they choose; everyone possesses the exact same list of rights..
This pledge does not require the loss of anything put at risk. But each person must be willing to put all that they are and possess at risk in order to secure their rights. The longer they allow their government to get out of their control, the more likely the actual losses when they do finally act.
The losses are certain when people do nothing. The government will tax them to death —consuming their life and their fortunes; also, destroying the value of their Honor, the reputation of a good name.
The government will pass laws that destroy the value of the person's good name, —their sacred honor; when they violate those unconstitutional laws. The government tries them as criminals for having done nothing but violate an unconstitutional law, while —exercising one of their protected rights covered by Amendment 9; which states:
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.
The unconstitutional law, itself, being the worst crime, as it violates The Supreme Law of the Land; detailed in The Constitution of the United States of America, Article 6. It states:
"This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding."
The difference between the two pledges is massive.
The nation, though it started falling right from the start; finished its fall when the citizens became willing pledge their allegiance to a government, The Republic (Article 4, Section 4) that owes its allegiance to the people, by way of The Constitution of the United States of America, Article 6.
The fall was not part of The Design. However, warnings about the fall are given so that the people might prepare for it when shows up.
—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends [the security of the people's rights], it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government [...]
[...] and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
A nation has fallen when the citizens do nothing to stop the ever-increasing government violations against their Standing Constitution.
Know what they did or did not do to protect The Constitution of the United States of America, —especially against Domestic Enemies.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America details what is a domestic enemy by outlining what is a tyrant and despot.
The governed people, are intended to work together to properly control their government's powers to equally protect each other's rights.
